JAMES Lafferty, general manager of British American Tobacco (BAT),
said "we left (in 1999) because the market is unfair. Now, we believe
that change is in the air."
BAT is supporting the unitary tax on cigarettes and alcohol products
while the rest of the industries are moving heaven and earth to prevent
the passage of House Bill 5727 authored by Cavite Rep. Joseph Abaya and
supported to the hilt by the Department of Finance.
Lafferty said the bill will level the playing field. Other cigarette
makers say the proposal will send them faster to their graves.
A source in the Tobacco Institute explained to Malaya Business
Insight in a chance interview that the bill will benefit BAT in terms of
lower excise tax rates on its imported brands, namely, Lucky Strike and
Dunhill.
