MAASIN CITY – This city is pushing for the prohibition of smoking in
homes as part of its smoking ban with the local government expressing
concern on the impact of second-hand smoking to children.
Mayor Maloney Samaco said their campaign is now focused on
encouraging parents to quit smoking for the welfare of other household
members.

“We cannot really force people to quit smoking but we can encourage them to stop the practice by educating them,” he said.
He said the city’s smoking ban in public and public utility vehicles
may have prompted people to smoke inside their homes, which may affect
children’s health.
The city has been distributing stickers with texts “Care for Kids
& Others, This is a… No Smoking Home.” The city wants households to
post these stickers at home to remind residents and visitors of the
smoking ban.
The city launched its smoking ban in March 31, 2009. This is in
compliance to the Department of Health Administrative Order 2009-0010 on
the comprehensive 100 percent smoke-free environment policy.
